I often find myself needing to download and upload large files when traveling. Usually, the hotel I'm staying at or the airport I'm traveling through has lousy internet. So I decided to start logging internet speeds at hotels, airports, coffee shops, and more—hoping it will help others who value fast, reliable internet and help me avoid returning to places that don't have it.
Pro tip: If you find yourself stuck without fast internet, go to the Apple Store. I've been able to consistently pull 100 Mbps symmetric over WiFi. If you ask nicely, the Apple Store employees will usually let you sit at the Genius Bar1 and tap into the ethernet.2 I've been able to get 1 Gbps symmetric hardwired in a few instances, which is great. Of course, you're limited by the store hours, proximity, and the friendliness of the employees. And you'll probably want to show up with a Mac to increase your chances.
